I dread the day
Strange thing to say
Forgetting it was May
If it was July
It would be
You lie
You lie
You lie
You lie like a donkey fly
Words from my past that make me smile
Calm my nerves
What some use liquor for
Some use herbs
I use words
To say
I dread the day
When all I’ve planned
Falls through the bottomless basket
Ceremoniously into a casket
And I hear the naysayers at the funeral
“What’s good playa playa?”
Greeting from a distance
But up close
I see their pleasure strain
At the seams of a fake smile
For instance
Gloating
Bile
Rising
I dread the day
I lose all I’ve gained
All that water
Collected from
All that rain
Leaving behind a mind
Drowning
Because the body will never make it to Spain
I dread the day
When I put my pen on the … Continue reading

High Steve
Sure
Not even
They say
So they stoned Steven
Bleeding
That’s the result
Hearts
Needing rehabilitation
Ventilation
Because they weren’t made for this
At creation
Born in sin
So the story goes
Brothers become enemies
Family become foes
And they’re in your home
So it’s
Walk softly
Stay on your toes
Get them
Before they get you
Never knowing
About the perspectives
That will allow you to
See who
Is the reason
You are where you are
A mirror
Maybe
See those scars
A warrior
Maybe
Screaming who wants war
You are who you are
Presently
But the other view is from the past
Not too far
By way of some movies star –
Ring
Malcolm
Martin
Marcus
Heard of them
But you don’t know who they are
Significant
So I’ll say it again
You know them
But you don’t know who they are
Or what they stood for
And … Continue reading
Fall in Love For a Minute
“I was inspired by the line from Isaiah Rashad’s song “Mani Lux”; key line – ‘You made me fall in love for a minute’.”
You made me fall in love for a minute
Then I woke up from the fantasy
And saw the real me
Reappear in the mirror
Behind my own eyes
See
You
Made me fall in love for a minute
Then I got my grind back
Reinstated focus
On my empire
Instead of clinging to your
Desire
You
Made me fall in love for a minute
Then I thought
Let me flip the switch
Catch you in my net
Make you fall in love for a life time
‘Cause I’m that
Tempting
You
Fall in love for a minute
Encased in your heart
You can’t let me go
Thirsty for my soul
Hungry for that real
Love
You
Fall in love for a minute
I’m all you … Continue reading
Pretty to the Masses
Flawless
That’s how she makes it in the morning
Way before you see her
Long before you think of yawning
Sometimes she thinks about it
The effort is so daunting
Sparks a new thought
Wisdom begins its dawning
But by midday the heat has started clawing
And she takes shade under an awning
The audience is ahhhing
Disappointed
But she’s already made it to a bigger
Stage
Filled with OOOS and AAAS and
She forgets the disappointing
Phase
Her hard work paid off
So her face the cracks no longer show in
Making sure
She’s pretty to the masses
Heartless
That’s how the rumours started
Look at the way she flaunts it
Many feeling taunted
But the audience tells her
“It’s not your fault.
They could have had it if they wanted.”
She trusts them
Because when her morale fell
They were the ones who caught it
Supplanted
Family
Friends… Continue reading
The Same Stories – Blessing
It was the day the plane ticket came
And it had my name
Took me away from gold
My heartbeat
Stuck me in a car seat
Or the seat of a car
Life’s sweet
Said someone
But I don’t know who you are
Look how far you’ve come
Wishing the ticket didn’t have my name
Because I could hear them sayin’
“You’re blessed…”
I wish I had your brain
That was a common sayin’
What do I say to that
You know I’m black
Even if I loved the world
They wouldn’t love me back
What if all I had to say was that
When they tell me
Apply yourself
Nothing in this world can hold you back
But all I hear is the voice telln’ me that
I shouldn’t forget where I’m coming from
That was childhood
And it takes me back
Wishing the ticket didn’t have my name… Continue reading
