Let ‘em have it
All the tough talk
Their lack of faux pas
The times they said you were so soft
Saying you didn’t get dirty enough
That you couldn’t soap off
The funny thing about putting one line of truth
In a web of deceit
Is it
Catches the flies and triggers the spiders
Like that one episode of sliders
Where they mixed them with wasps
Let ‘em have it
Are you with me so far
Proclaimed king before I could walk
Lost my legs half way to the throne
And I was so lost
Have enough power to start a revolution
But I’m no boss
They keep saying
Let ‘em have it
Even when my poetry is deeper than anything
You’ve read before
Anyone’s put
In your head before
Because most have never made it that six feet
Never been
Left for dead before

“Does she need a lover
Or a brother
Or maybe the figure of a father?
Does she love me
Enough to
Put me above her
Every other?
Is she using me to buffer
The feedback from her mother?
I mean…”
This even – ing
He was contemplating
The merits of going home
Was it home
Was it just a covering
He shared with other bodies
Where he wasn’t all alone
That’s when
He saw the number on the phone
“Truth.”
He was silent after the greeting
Truth spoke
Evoked
Memories
That made him say
“Nice to hear your voice.
It’s been a long time
And no
The choice wasn’t fully mine.”
Truth interrupted
Hearing the doubt in his wording
urging
him to change his verse and

Yesterday.
