How to Read my Poetry – First Entry

When my poetry is read I’ve been told that it can get confusing. With that in mind and with a will and effort to make the poems more approachable I’ve decided to start an explanation of a few pieces that have already been written. The complexity of the poetry isn’t what should draw a potential reader at first and if read properly the word play and the true intricacy will only play a role for those who are willing to look at them a little deeper. Usually what stands out in all my poems is my complete lack of regard for punctuation and also in that vein, grammar. It’s not to say that grammar doesn’t play a role in my writing but the purposeful omission should be a clue as to how I write. With that in mind I’ve started out with two of the simpler poems where the meaning is obvious and less subjective. I’ll briefly touch on the word play and give it my best effort to explain why using an overabundance of grammatical structure is counterproductive to the style I’m trying to develop. If you are interested and you would like to understand them a bit better this will be by far the best way to see past the twists and turns. If getting in touch with me directly is something you think twice about hopefully these videos can waylay that thought process, change it around. Unfortunately there will be little effort made towards entertainment as the strict goal is to be informative. Without digressing further let’s get into the videos below:

“Historical Prophecy: Judas”
I’m a lot smarter than I look…always trying to beat the system so I’ve got the vision[s] of a crook…and for that I was mistook…even left a lot of the cold ‘hearted’ one’s shook…but what did they say about judging the cover of a book…as far as rivers go…I’m the St. Lawrence…a lot deeper than a brook…you know the one in the kitchen saying she can cook…I’m lyrically gifted don’t get it twisted…I could kill you with words alone…turn bread to stone but I’m not hungry…I shifted uneasily as I spotted the guy with the shifty eyes…I pretended I slept…in my mind I wept…as I saw him creep and ‘leapt’…there was a grin on my face as he met the end of my blade saw him went weak…this hasn’t happened yet…it’s just a warning…I don’t want to see a mother weep…I’ve woken up because for a while I’ve gotten by pretending I was weak…I’m calm I’m humble maybe I’m even meek…but don’t perceive kindness and letting you live as a sign of being weak…this is what we should always teach…kid’s in life if you think you’re the biggest in the pond there’s always a bigger leach…and there’s always someone watching smiling saying that there’s not a life in the pond that’s out of his reach…preach!…

This is how the second verse goes…we all gotta eat…I really love to share when the foods really sweet…the mutton and the lamb and the bread made with whole grain wheat…and I’ll always wash your feet because they got dirty as you walked in the street…You see I got a few Peters on my side so please don’t try to creep…we all gotta eat…and thirty pieces of silver when you’re dead doesn’t taste as sweet…I saw them in the evening as they stoned my friend Steven…they said they were getting even…mistakes of the past I’m trying to avoid for the future…the documentary isn’t going to headline…G.C. death unsolved: who was the shooter…and for all the Mary’s in the world…I’m glad that I knew you…don’t grieve when I leave you…with is some things that I leave you…self even if no one believes you…we all gotta eat…and the tears bittersweet…don’t taste as sweet…things like this should be taught in schools…and maybe we wouldn’t be bats…some as blind as fools…this hasn’t happened yet and never will if we have a better teacher…and Judas while you’re alive tell Mary that you need her…It’s always over a woman…and if I told you from the genesis…I’d make you a believer.

“Sometimes in Life”
There are times in life when you say you love
There are times in life when you say you like
And there are times when when you say arite (alright)
Let’s do dis (this)
Me Mr
You Miss
Me more than you like to say

That was a long encounter
Okay
Explanation needed
Hol[d] on little distract – ed my little baby’s teeth -ed
Beggin[g] to be feed – ed
Back to the story sometimes in life
You become a husband and you get a wife
And you you say there’s gotta be more maybe not(s)
Unless you’re right
And you can sit in the union because of necessity
Or obligation
Or you can leave because you spite
Hush little baby….
Arite but sometimes in life
We make mistakes we’re wrong accidents happen
And sometimes in life its arite
To be the bad guy get in a fight
Defend what you love and cherish
Because even in darkness your future’s bright
Don[‘t] worry baby when you grow up
You gon say dese grown ups dey like
Look at life and don’t see it right
Do things because they’re selfish and out of spite
And little one this is a love story
Without tradition or boundaries
Because we got MSN, MySpace, Facebook…even Skype
An if we make it out we[‘re] soldiers…we[‘re] strong
Not luck…’cause we’re arite
This was a letter to my unborn child
About my future life
And what it might be like
Sometimes in life…we’re just like mediocre
Average…just arite
And sometimes we dream and we get what we like
To all those future husbands and future wives
You feelin me right…it could be like this
But you know…sometimes in life…
